Case Study

Multi-Band SCORPION Flyaway Terminal with Integrated COMTECH HEIGHTS Modem

UME required a uniquely tailored satellite terminal that could seamlessly integrate with their existing COMTECH HEIGHTS satellite network

The solution needed to be compact, field-ready, and capable of operating on the new SpainSat NG-II satellite and support multi-band operation, enabling flexibility across X-Band and Ka-Band frequencies whilst deliver high-throughput connectivity with minimal setup and training overhead.

UME required a uniquely tailored satellite terminal that could seamlessly integrate with their existing COMTECH HEIGHTS satellite network, while being compact, field-ready, and capable of operating on the new SpainSat NG-II satellite. The system needed to support multi-band operation, enabling flexibility across X-Band and Ka-Band frequencies, and deliver high-throughput connectivity with minimal setup and training overhead.

Holkirk’s Solution

Leveraging Holkirk’s modular design philosophy and integration expertise, we engineered a bespoke version of our SCORPION manpack flyaway terminal to meet UME’s exacting requirements:

  • Full integration of the COMTECH HEIGHTS IP modem into the SCORPION chassis, preserving the compact form factor and rugged usability.

  • Interchangeable X-Band and Ka-Band RF transceivers, allowing rapid reconfiguration for mission-specific frequency needs.

  • Multi-band operation with a unified control interface, enabling seamless switching and simplified user interaction.

  • GPS-denial mitigation and multi-orbit compatibility, ensuring operational resilience in contested or degraded environments.

Operational Impact

The result is a highly deployable, interoperable SATCOM terminal that empowers UME to execute adaptive PACE planning across multiple sorties using a single hardware family. This dramatically reduces logistical complexity, training requirements, and cost of ownership, while enhancing mission agility and communications assurance.

Summary

Holkirk’s collaboration with UME exemplifies our commitment to delivering mission-ready, user-centric SATCOM solutions. By combining advanced RF engineering with real-world operational insight, we continue to support Europe’s leading defense and emergency response teams with tools that perform when it matters most.
