Holkirk’s new BMS-2590 is purpose built for teams relying on BB2590 MIL-STD batteries in demanding SATCOM and field deployment environments.
It gives operators something the standard battery alone can’t, real time intelligence, control, and confidence.
Designed for modern multi-band terminals and high‑demand field operations, the BMS2590 delivers:
-
Smart, real‑time battery health monitoring
-
Accurate state‑of‑charge and state‑of‑health reporting
-
Improved safety, thermal protection, and fault detection
-
Optimised power delivery for mission‑critical SATCOM equipment
-
A compact, robust form factor engineered for harsh environments
Whether supporting rapid‑deployment comms, remote broadcast, defence operations, or emergency response, the BMS-2590 gives operators the confidence that their power system is as reliable as the link they’re trying to maintain.
Optimised performance when powering Holkirk terminals, but fully compatible with other systems, the BMS-2590 is a rugged, compact solution engineered for harsh field conditions
By turning the BB-2590 into a fully monitored, actively managed power source, the BMS-2590 helps operators reduce downtime, prevent unexpected failures, and maintain mission critical connectivity with confidence.
Battery Management System (BMS) provides real-time monitoring and control over multiple BB2590 MIL-STD batteries, ensuring optimised power distribution through a make-before-brake system.
Make‑Before‑Break battery switching
The BMS-2590 incorporates a Make‑Before‑Break switching mechanism to ensure continuous, uninterrupted system operation during both automatic and manual battery transfers.
When a battery switch is initiated, the BMS first connects the alternate battery to the power bus before disengaging the currently active battery.
This overlapping connection period prevents any momentary loss of power, eliminates brown‑out conditions, and maintains stable voltage delivery to the terminal and associated electronics.
Whether triggered automatically due to low capacity or cell imbalance, or manually by the operator, the Make‑Before‑Break function guarantees seamless power continuity throughout the switching process.
Manual switching between batteries
The system includes an automatic/manual battery switching feature that allows the operator to select which battery, Battery A or Battery B is supplying input power.
Automatic battery switching (low‑power condition)
The BMS-2590 continuously monitors the output power of the active battery. If the available output power from the selected battery falls below 10%, the system interprets this as a low‑capacity condition. When this threshold is reached, the BMS automatically transfers the power source to the alternate battery to maintain uninterrupted system operation.
Automatic battery switching (battery fault condition)
If the BMS‑2590 detects that the voltage levels between the two cells in the same battery differ by more than 10%, this is interpreted as a battery fault. In this situation, the BMS automatically transfers the power source to the alternate battery to maintain uninterrupted system operation.
This Make-Before-Break switching ensures continuous power delivery, prevents deep discharge of the active battery, and provides seamless redundancy during extended field use.
Blackout Function
To conserve power and reduce screen glare during extended operation, the BMS‑2590 includes an automatic Blackout Function. After a preset period of inactivity, the Cell Status screens will automatically blank, switching the display into a low‑power state. All monitoring and battery management functions continue to operate normally during blackout mode.
Holkirk continues to focus on practical innovation with solutions that make field operations simpler, safer, and more resilient. The BMS-2590 is a perfect example of that mission in action.
