Spain’s UME Sets the Standard for Modern Emergency Response – With Holkirk Scorpion at the Heart of Recent Missions

Jul 25, 2026

Natural disasters continue to expose critical gaps in early emergency management, where governments often struggle to restore essential services and protect affected communities. Around the world, this challenge is driving new initiatives focused on tighter coordination between civilian agencies and military forces to ensure faster, more effective crisis response.

Spain became a pioneer in this field with the creation of the Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME). Designed as a dedicated military force for emergency operations, UME provides rapid, disciplined, and highly trained support during national and international disasters. Its proven capability has captured the attention of governments and global organisations, positioning UME as a leading model for civil‑military cooperation in emergencies.

Case Study

The UME has recently returned from Venezuela after supporting relief efforts following the devastating earthquakes that struck the region. With national infrastructure severely damaged and local networks overwhelmed, reliable communication became a critical lifeline for coordination and safety.

During this mission, UME deployed their Holkirk Scorpion manpack terminals and the results were decisive. In a congested environment where commercial satellite services such as Starlink struggled under heavy load, the Scorpion delivered stable, high‑performance connectivity that allowed UME teams to maintain command links, share situational updates, and coordinate with international partners.

Upon returning to Spain, UME immediately redeployed the same Scorpion systems to support emergency operations during the country’s severe wildfires.

Once again, the terminals provided dependable communications in remote, infrastructure‑challenged terrain, enabling rapid decision‑making and uninterrupted support to frontline responders.

The Scorpion’s lightweight design, rapid setup, and robust performance continue to prove essential for emergency teams who need guaranteed connectivity when every second counts.

At Holkirk, we recognise the importance of organisations like UME in shaping the future of emergency response.

Their commitment to preparedness, technical excellence, and international cooperation mirrors our own mission: delivering reliable, rapidly deployable satellite communication solutions that keep responders connected when conventional networks fail.

Multi-Band, Mission-Ready

The SCORPION supports X, Ku, and Ka-Band operation via field-swappable RF modules, allowing users to reconfigure frequency bands in under 10 minutes—no tools required. Reflector sizes from 60 cm to 1.0 m are available, all of which pack into a single backpack or trolley case weighing under 25 kg.

Performance That Meets the Standard

SCORPION is designed to meet or exceed key tactical SATCOM benchmarks:

  • G/T Performance at 20° Elevation

    • X-Band: ≥ 14.5 dB/K

    • Ku-Band: ≥ 17.5 dB/K

    • Ka-Band: ≥ 19.5 dB/K

  • EIRP Capability

    • X-Band: ≥ 52 dBW

    • Ku-Band: ≥ 54 dBW

    • Ka-Band: ≥ 58 dBW

Rapid Deployment, No Specialist Required

SCORPION is built for speed and simplicity:

  • Unpacks and deploys in under 10 minutes

  • Tears down and packs in under 10 minutes

  • No tools required for setup or teardown

This makes SCORPION V2 ideal for non-specialist operators in dynamic field conditions.

Precision Pointing with Integrated Intelligence

The integrated manual-assist antenna controller features:

  • Real-time feedback on antenna position and satellite location

  • Built-in beacon receiver, GPS, digital magnetometer, and inclinometer

  • Enhanced acquisition accuracy for manpack and portable terminals

 Built for Harsh Environments

With an IP65-rated enclosure, SCORPION is fully sealed against dust and water ingress. All RF connections and control interfaces are internal, no dangling wires, no exposed connectors.

SCORPION isn’t just portable it’s operationally complete. From coalition interoperability to rapid deployment and high-performance metrics, Holkirk’s SCORPION terminal is ready to meet the mission, wherever it leads.
